[python-advocacy] Marketing Python - An Idea Whose Time Has Come

I'm new to this list, and relatively new to Python. I've been using it for a few months, and really like it.

Recently, I was looking for a book to help my son learn programming. I could find nothing suitable, and, long story short, I've started on a project to write a programming book for kids using Python (and pygame, and PythonCard) as the language. Long road ahead, don't know where it will lead, but I'm going to give it a go. I have ~100 pages done, and early feedback from some peers who I respect (one teaches a kids programming class) is, good, so I'm going to press on.

But the reason for this post is something else...

I was quite alarmed recently when I stumbled onto www.pyth_n.com (typo intentional), and found a hard-core porn site! Didn't anyone think over the years to register this web address for something related to the Python language?

I'm now worried that kids learning python will stumble across this site when looking for information, docs, modules, or whatever. The site has no consent page (e.g. "I am over 18 and wish to enter..."), but goes straight to hard-core porn (with some very graphic pictures and animations).

(It's not funny, but the title of this thread is quite ironic in this context...)

I would think that part of any marketing effort for Python would be to separate itself from this kind of online material. If there is any way the pyth_n.com domain can be wrested away from its current owner, I would be very happy and relieved to see that happen.

(Sorry if I'm rehashing an old issue - I looked through the archives and didn't see it. I don't know how long the site has been up, but I think I remember going to that address not too long ago and it was not what it is now.)
